  OBITUARY Georgetown Gazette Thursday April 14, 1898 Death has again entered and removed from our midst one of Georgetown's best citizens. Joseph Irish was born in Oxford County, Maine, October 6, 1833. He came to California at the age of 20 years, settling at Rose Springs, El Dorado County. At that place he was married to Miss Mary Dorman, who is now lying at the point of death. In the spring of 1869 he moved to Bear Creek, where, for two years, he had charge of R. Demuth's sawmill. At the expiration of that time Mr. Irish moved to the Turner ranch, where several years were spent in logging for Pease & Benjamin. Since 1877 he has resided on his ranch below Georgetown, on the Dry Creek road. While Morning Light Lodge, I.O.O.F., was in existence at Spanish Flat, Mr. Irish was an active Odd Fellow, but since that lodge surrendered its charter, he had not identified himself with the order here. Deceased was a charter member of Georgetown Lodge, No. 121, A.O.U.W., under whose auspices the funeral was held, from Odd Fellows' Hall Thursday afternoon. Rev. Thos. Murrish conducted the services. Death resulted from an aggravated case of la grippe. He was ill but a few days. There is left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father, the widow, two sons, Charles F. and Frank H. Irish, and two daughters, Mrs. Emma Stanley and Mrs. Rose Swift. Two daughters, Mrs. Ella Ford and Alice J. Irish, having preceded him in death by a few years. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction. SHORT BIOGRAPHY Joseph Irish is a son of Freeman and Almeda (Rowe) Irish, of Oxford County, Maine, where he was born on October 6, 1832. He worked on a farm till 21 years of age, then went to learn the shoemaker’s trade. He worked at his trade in the town of Randolph, Massachusetts, until 1853 when he emigrated to California and located on Dry creek, below Placerville. In 1864 he removed to Bear creek and engaged in operating a saw mill, now owned by Reuben Demuth. In 1876 he moved to his present home of 240 acres, on which he grows all kinds of fruit and does a general farming business. He was married in 1856 to Mary Russell a native of Boston, Massachusetts. They have a family of four daughters and two sons, viz: Charles F., Mary E., Franklin H., Rosa A., Ella M. and Alice J. Mr. Irish is a member of the I.O.O.F., and Ancient Order of United Workmen at Georgetown.
